The ILWU urges members to vote NO on the anti-union effort to recall Governor Newsom

The Titled Officers are urging ILWU members to vote NO on the recall of Governor Gavin Newsom. A network of big-money, special-interest groups have spent millions of dollars putting this recall election on the ballot because they are unable to win office through a fair election and know that they cannot convince a majority of California voters to support their anti-union agenda. By taking advantage of the recall rules, these oligarchs are hoping to erase Newsom’s 2018 landslide election victory and take power with the support of only small minority of voters.

The recall is not about Gavin Newsom. It’s about millionaires forcing their unpopular agenda on voters and lowering the wages and conditions of workers to make themselves even richer.

“The recall of Governor Gavin Newsome is a threat to the State’s working class and to the common-sense health measures that have protected Californians from the runaway COVID outbreaks that we see in states like Florida and Texas,” said ILWU International President Willie Adams. “We urge ILWU members to reject this cynical attempt to undermine the will of the overwhelming majority of California voters. Help us defeat this backdoor attempt by the rich to roll back the gains unions have made on wages, pensions, health care, and safety, and more by voting NO on the recall.”

The candidates trying to replace the Governor have one thing in common: A long history of attacking unions. Under the rules of the recall election, an anti-union candidate could win with only 10% of the votes cast.

Four years of chaos, mismanagement of the pandemic, and attacks on our democratic institutions by Donald Trump have shown how much damage the wrong person in office can have on our country. The same interests that brought chaos to the federal government in 2016 now seek to bring it to the State of California. We cannot afford to let that happen.

All registered voters will receive mail-in ballots and should be arriving within the next few days. When your ballot arrives, please join other ILWU members by returning your ballot right away (no postage necessary) and VOTE NO on the recall! You can also vote in person at a voting center or polling place. California voters can register online or by mail to receive a mail-in ballot until August 30 at registertovote.ca.gov. You can also register the same day as you vote in person at a polling place or vote center after September 4.
