“FIRST BLOOD”
MAY 15, 2024
We will once again be honoring those members who were killed on the job.
While this is a solemn affair, this year will be even more important as we commemorate the 90-year anniversary of the birth of the ILWU. On May 15, 1934, in Wilmington, California, Dickie Parker and John Knudsen were shot while defending the picket line. It was the beginning of the fight that led to the General Strike in San Francisco and ultimately the ILWU gaining recognition by the employers. Our hiring hall and working conditions were not given to us, we fought, and men died for them.
We shall never forget our origins and will honor those brave men who stood up for what we have today.
Please join us on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 12:00 noon on Harbor Blvd. and 5th Street, in San Pedro for the ceremony. Lunch will be provided, and we encourage you to bring friends, family, and any ILWU brothers & sisters.
Fraternally,
Gary Herrera Mario Medina Jesse Lopez
President Vice President Secretary/Treasurer
