Increased usage update

Everyone should know that all ILWU Local 13 outlets are controlled by the ILWU Local 13 (ilwu13.com, ILWU 13 Facebook Page, ilwu13news on Twitter, and Local13ILWU on YouTube).  This means ALL updates and information must be submitted by the elected officials at Local 13.  For obvious reasons many of them are currently busy and as such updates may not be as quick to come as many would like. The use of the new ILWU Local 13 website and its corresponding social media outlets are being heavily used due to events regarding the ILWU 63-OCU.  These new systems are still in the beginning stages for the Local.  What this means is that while greatly appreciated with the huge increase in usage there are adjustments to be made.  For the Facebook Page we have not seen traffic like this since it was created a year ago.  With this added interest has come more comments and has created a need for guidelines.

The Facebook guidelines are as follows:

We welcome all comments on ILWU Local 13 Facebook Page provided the following guidelines are met. Our intent is to create a space for civilized and reasonable conversation and sharing of ideas, thoughts, and feelings.  That does not mean comments will be free of disagreement, but it does mean that they will be moderated to prevent personal attack or threats, use of obscene or offensive language, invasion of privacy, commercial solicitation, use of multiple Facebook accounts, or other postings that we find disruptive. Lastly all comments must pertain to the post the comment is made on.

When individuals violate these standards, we may delete their posts, or ban them permanently from posting on our Facebook Page. We may maintain lists of individuals with deleted posts or who have previously been banned. Your decision to post a comment on our page is your permission for us to use and re-purpose your comment as we see fit.

We ask that people seeing comments they find offensive or otherwise in violation of these rules report them to: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

I also understand the need for information and for this reason I have been working hard on getting any updates I can.  Your emails, messages, and comments are NOT going unnoticed.  I have been in contact with ILWU International as well as the ILWU Coast Division who have Public Relations and Media Officials.  They have been a great help in supplying most of the updates including support letters from various Congressional, State, and County leaders.

The importance and proper use of these outlets are now very apparent and will make a huge difference in getting information out to those who want or need it.  At the website meeting with the Local Officers for an end of year update this will be brought up and discussed if changes need to be made to help with the distribution of information.

Personally I would like to thank all those who have been patient with the progress of all Local 13 media outlets.  Suggestions, comments, or questions are always greatly appreciated to help improve them.

Server Upgrades

Currently we are working on upgrading the website server.  We have gotten several calls, emails, and  a few notices on our feedback program of slow sites speeds and "500 server" errors.  Over the last month the site has been reworked for faster speeds but even with these improvements there are just too many people trying to access the site at certain times of the day.  The only sure way to fix this is to go to a server with the capacity to handle  nearly 1000 visitors and 50,000 hits in a hour.  These are very good numbers showing that the site is used frequently and by a large number of people.

To give you a statistical breakdown between the new and old site look at the comparisons below

New Site (ilwu13.com) Old Site (ilwu-local13.org)
Page Views (month) 300,000+ 70,000
Hits (month) 3,300,000+ 350,000
Peak Page Views (In 1 Hour) 12,000+ 4,000
Peak Hits (In 1 Hour) 200,000+ 20,000

We would like to think that these increases are due to the availability of more news and information along with a more regular set of dispatch summary updates.  Our social networking is also improving and adding to the traffic to the website.  With over 400 Facebook "likes", 200 twitter "followers" and monthly newsletter the site gets over 7,500 visitors a month through these related links.

With this server upgrade we will be able to handle the expected new features that are planned in the near future so stay posted.

Please be patient while these upgrades and transfers are taking place.

March Website Update

ILWU Local 13 Website Admin

We have been working hard to keep all the bulletins, news, and dispatch summaries updated regularly and timely.  The site has been fully running since the beginning of the year and is looking to be a huge success.  Not only are we showing over 3 Million hits a month but (as many may experienced) the site has had such high traffic volumes at sometimes during the day that it has crashed the site.  We are working on this and ask for everyone's patience during the nightside final updates at 2:00pm.

Social Networking

There has been a lot of time and effort to try and reach out to as many people as possible both in the Union and in the public.
